In the town of Paia is the famous Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon.
Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon is on the north, windward side of Maui and is known for good, solid, “comfort” food. It’s located in the heart of the historic town of Paia, on the Road To Hana.
Charley’s is located on the Road To Hana (Hwy. 36), which is the single road to take to the remote town of Hana on the windward (eastern most) part of Maui. But Paia is also worthy of some time, as there are many small gift shops, art galleries, surf shops, and clothing boutiques.
This small, sugar plantation town has a “hippie feel” to it.
The famous country singer, Willie Nelson, is a frequent customer of Charley’s Restaurant when he is on the island, even though he is not one of the owners of the eatery, as some rumors suggest.
Charley’s Restaurant is also a hang-out for celebrities, political figures, musicians, and well-known surfers – it’s not uncommon to be sitting at the bar with someone famous. Some nights there is live music in the evening.
Suggestions For Charley’s Restaurant:
- Consider having breakfast at Charley’s on your early morning drive to Hana. Try the pancakes (huge and can be shared) or an omelette.
- Or stop at Charley’s on your way back from Hana and try their pizza. It’s very good, one of the best on the island, and the beer is always cold.
- Drive over to Paia from the Lahaina, Kihei, and Wailea areas and enjoy this historic, somewhat quirky town.
- Stop at Baldwin Beach either before or after lunch at Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon, or spend the day at the beach and have dinner at Charley’s before heading back to the other side of Maui.
