Maui’s 10 Best Activities

Maui has some of the most exciting activities of all the Hawaiian islands.  There’s everything from snorkeling, hiking, watching incredible sunsets, whale watching tours, walking to waterfalls, to driving up to 10,000 feet on a dormant volcano.

Let’s take a look at the 10 best things to do on Maui:

  1. Haleakala Crater.  This is one of the top activities, as there’s few places on this planet where you can go to over 10,000 feet in just 32 miles to a dormant volcano.  Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times (along with a full moon), and it’s a national park so there is a small fee.  This is a must-do activity on Maui and you can plan your visit to Haleakala for the morning or afternoon.
  2. Iao Valley.  This is a historical, lush, green valley with an ice-cold stream of water coming down from one of the wettest spots on the planet.  Iao Valley is a nice half-day trip in Wailuku and is a great spot if you’re heading to a late departure from the main airport in Kahului.  Plan for 1 hour at the park.
  3. Whale Watching.  The native-to-Hawaii Humpback Whale makes its annual migration from the feeding grounds in Alaska starting in October.  But the best Humpback Whale watching is from January to March.  If you’re visiting Maui during Humpback Whale season, this is an absolute must-see activity.  The Whale Festival is in the month of February.
  4. Snorkeling.  Maui has some of the best snorkeling in the world, with warm, crystal-clear waters on the west Maui and south Maui sides of the island. There’s many top-notch snorkel operators and Captain Steve’s is one of the best.
  5. Ulalena/Burnin Love.   The Ulalena show in Lahaina on west Maui has been called a “stunning theatrical sensation” by National Geographic.  It covers the history of Hawaii.  The Burnin’ Love show is one of best entertainment values on Maui, with an excellent Elvis impersonator and a really good show for the whole family.
  6. Road to Hana.  Everyone hears both good and bad about this famous drive before they come to Maui.  It’s really not as bad as everyone says, but there are a lot of twists, switchbacks, and turns.  The Road to Hana is still a must-do activity on Maui.  Suggestion:  Leave early, take your time, and make it a full day adventure.
  7. Molokini. Molokini is a snorkel trip to a small, uninhabited volcano crater.  You won’t actually get on Molokini, but will snorkel around in calm, clear water.  Sometimes you can see up to 60 feet below you!
  8. A Luau Feast.  Maui has some of the best luau feasts you’ll find anywhere.  The Old Lahaina Luau and the Feast at Lele are two of the most popular and must be booked in advance, but there are over 10 more on Maui.  It’s a fun way to spend an evening and learn more about the Hawaiian culture.
  9. Parasailing & Submarine Tours.  There are several safe, professional parasailing operators on Maui, where you can see Maui and Lanai from high in the sky.  Then go underneath the water inside an Atlantis Submarine, and see Hawaii from a different view.
  10. Sunset Dinner Cruise.  There’s nothing better (or more romantic) than watching a Maui sunset while sipping a Mai Tai on the calm ocean waters around Maui.  The Princess Sunset Dinner Cruise out of the Lahaina harbor is one of the best.  During Humpback Whale season, you get the extra benefit of seeing whales around you.

BONUS:  Helicopter Tours.  One of the most incredible views of Maui comes from a helicopter, and Maui has several top-notch helicopter operators.  Blue Hawaiian Helicopters is one of most popular.
